The Spirit Lake Park boys track team earned its first Lakes Conference championship on Monday in Estherville.

“It’s a huge accomplishment for our team to get its first title,” said SLP coach Brad Travis. “We’ve been second quite a few times. The Lakes Conference is such a great conference as evidenced by the times.

“This was the goal we set at the start of the season and it shows how hard these young men have worked,” he said.

Nine seniors scored points in helping the Indians earn the title. They are Joe Nellis, Greg Orwig, Dan Pearson, Boomer Dreeszen, Alyx Campbell, Quade Klepper, John Leinbaugh, Chris Hemphill and Curtis Jacks.

“They’ve been great leaders and role models and they’ve all worked hard to get where they are,” Travis said.

However, the coach also attributed the championship to team depth.

“It’s not about having four or five guys getting first or second, though we have those–it’s about having guys getting the fourth, fifth and sixth spots,” he said.

Eleven SLP athletes earned all-conference honors by placing first or second.

Orwig had a part in three top finishes. He won the 200-meter dash in 22.42 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 5 inches.

He also anchored the 4×400-meter relay of Campbell, Brandon Griffin and Pearson, which clocked in at 3:27.28.

Also earning top finishes were the 4×800 and 1600 medley relays.

The 4×100-meter relay team of Campbell, Dreeszen, Hemphill and Mike Sheridan clocked in at 45.13 seconds for second place.
