SLP girls win fourth Lakes crown

By Staff | May 7, 2008

The Spirit Lake Park girls track team won its fourth Lakes Conference title on Monday in Estherville.

For coach Tim Heinitz, the fourth championship feels just as good as the first.

“It was a long time before we got that first one, so you never take even one championship for granted,” he said. “For our seniors, this group has bragging rights for winning four conference titles. What a feat. We’ve had good leadership from our seniors. They come to practice every day and never miss.”

Seniors Kaisha Brown, Carrie Emgarten, Christina Hansen, Kylie Sebert and Jen Kirschbaum all earned points in Monday’s event.

Twelve SLP athletes earned all-conference honors by placing first or second as the Indians scored 158.33 points. Storm Lake was second with 132.33 points.

Megan Skalbeck, Emgarten and Megan Lawler each took part in two first-place events.

Skalbeck won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inches and then anchored the winning 4×800-meter relay with Emgarten, Kaisha Brown and Mary Brown in 10:10.64. Emgarten also won the 1500-meter run in 5:11.96.

Lawler won the 100-meter dash in 12.34 seconds and ran the lead leg of the 4×200-meter relay. She, Kylie Ingvall, Alex Horsman and Laura Rowe clocked in at 1:48.97 seconds.

Lawler finished second in the 200-meter dash in 26.18 seconds and also ran the anchor leg of the 4×100-meter relay team of Megan Ingvall, Kylie Ingvall and Jessica Wallace. Their time was 51.60 seconds.

Kaisha Brown was second in the 800-meter run in 2:30.59 while Deni Peters was second in the 400-meter dash in 61.63 seconds. Also placing second was the 4×400-meter relay team of Kaisha Brown, Horsman, McKenzie Dziedzic and Peters in 4:15.06.

Heinitz said he was hoping for even more all-conference winners, but a few athletes came up a little short.

Placing third was Kylie Ingvall in the 100-meter dash in 12.98 seconds.

Also third were the shuttle hurdle relay, the distance medley relay and the sprint medley relay.

The shuttle hurdle team of Kylie Sebert, Rowe, Sammy Spies and Kori Hiedebrink clocked in at 1:08.24.

The distance medley team of Horsman, Caila Jones, Kaisha Brown and Emgarten finished in 4:30.59.

The sprint medley team of Horsman, Lindsey Arneson, Kylie Ingvall and Peters finished in 1:55.35.
