By Staff | May 10, 2008

ORANGE CITY — Emily Jensen assured herself of qualifying for state in at least one event on Friday.

The Estherville Lincoln Central junior won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 24 seconds to earn an automatic state berth during the Class 3A Regional meet in Orange City.

“Emily is our only definite,” said ELC coach Tina Burton. “We’ll know more after midnight.”

The regional champion automatically qualifies for state with the rest of the qualifiers taken from top times around the state.

ELC had several third-place performances that could still qualify for state.

Christina Weston threw a personal-best in the shot put at 36 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Brittany Ross finished third in the 3000-meter run in 11:39 and third in the 1500 in 5:15.

The distance medley team of Taylar Jacobson, Brenna Wegner, Landra Lapka and Jensen also finished third in 4:23.

Placing fifth was Brooke Egeland in the 3000-meter run 12:00.

“I’m really happy with how the girls performed,” said Burton. “In the races we anticipated doing well in, we were in contention.”
