Juhl qualifies for state in four events
ORANGE CITY — A three-event state qualifier a year ago, senior Matt Juhl added one more event in 2008.
For the second straight year, Juhl qualified in the medley relay and the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.
On Friday, with the help of medley relay teammates Justin Blinkmann, Jordan Eggers and Scott Schmidt, the quartet also finished third in the 4×400-meter relay to qualify for state.
ELC’s fifth state qualifier is shot putter Marcus Stangl who won the event with a throw of 53 feet, 8 inches.
“It was a great meet. I’m really happy with our efforts,” said ELC coach Dick Barrett.
Juhl took first in the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 36. 9 seconds. He ran a season-best 10:03.7 in the 3200 to place third and qualify for state.
The medley relay team of Blinkmann, Eggers, Schmidt and Juhl finished second in 3:39.93.
Schmidt ran his 400 leg in 50.57 seconds with Juhl running the 800 anchor leg in 2:00.8.
The same quartet ran the 4×400 in 3:36.5 to place third.
The Midgets scored 49 points at the Class 3A District meet in Orange City.
Other placewinners include the following.
Brandon Hanson was fourth in the 400-meter low hurdles in 59.63 seconds.
Dan Kirchner was sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24.6 seconds.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Jessie Knaack, Jay Smith, Dane Ross and Hanson finished sixth in 1:04.
