Laker baseball season comes to an end

By Staff | May 10, 2008

MASON CITY — Ellsworth pitcher Roy Geigal struck out eight batters in 8 1/3 innings of work and Ryan Sharpe hit a two-RBI triple in the eighth to lead the Ellsworth Panthers past the Iowa Lakes Lakers 7-3 in the Region XI Baseball Tournament in Mason City.

The loss ended the Lakers’ season with a 28-24 record. Ellsworth played top-seeded Des Moines Area Community College Bears in Mason City at 1 p.m., Friday.

The Region XI Tournament from this point on is double elimination.

Iowa Lakes controlled the early innings of the game, behind stellar pitching by Ricardo Navarro. Jose Ayala scored the first run of the game for the Lakers on a passed ball thrown by Geigal in the bottom of the first.

The Lakers scored again in the third after a Luis Moran hit bounced off shortstop Kasey Reyes’ glove, allowing Edgardo Aulet to score from second.

Navarro dominated the first half of the game not allowing Ellsworth to get its first hit until a single by Ryan Sharpe in the fifth. Navarro then picked off Sharpe at first before the next pitch. Even more impressive, Navarro didn’t allow an Ellsworth runner to reach second until the sixth.

The momentum started to shift toward Ellsworth when Jhensen Santiago hit a RBI single in the seventh, but the Panthers took control of the game in the top of the eighth. With no outs, Reyes on first and Dustin Wilson on third, Reyes attempted to steal second.

Laker catcher Brian Bravo tried to throw Reyes out at second, but the throw got away from second baseman Abdiel Lebron, and Wilson took the opportunity to score and tie the game at 2-2.

Three batters later, Reyes and Caviness scored on Sharpe’s triple that flew over right fielder Jose Andino. Sharpe would score four pitches later on a wild pitch by Ivan Rodriguez to make it 5-2. Santiago walked on the wild throw, and would later score on a Matt Stice single. Eerily similar to the start of the inning, Bravo tried to throw out Stice on a steal attempt at second with Matt Winter on third, but Ayala missed the throw at second, and Winter scored on the play to end a six-run inning for the Panthers.

The Lakers scored one in the bottom of the inning off a Michael Jimenez single to make it 7-3 after eight. Geigal got the first out of the ninth for the Panthers before hitting a batter, bringing in Orlando Ortega to close the game. Ortega walked the bases loaded, but got the next two batters out to end the game.
