Another state qualifying duo

SPENCER — Spirit Lake/Okoboji will keep its string of sending tennis players to state alive.

This year, SL/O will send two freshmen to the individual 1A state tournament as the doubles team of Alli Gerking and Aubry Kolegraff placed first at Thursday’s regionals in Spencer.

Teammates Kassie Hein and Kara Crosgrove just missed qualifying for state as they placed third on the day.

Gerking and Kolegraff never gave up more than two games in any of their four matches.

The duo opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sioux City Heelan, then defeated Fort Dodge St. Edmonds 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals and finals were two Denison teams.

Gerking and Kolegraff won 6-1, 6-0 and then won 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile Hein and Kolegraff started the day with a win over Spencer, 6-4, 6-2 and then beat Cherokee 6-0, 6-2.

In the semifinal, they lost to a pair from Denison, 6-0, 6-4, but won in the consolation over the second Denison squad, 10-4.

In singles play, Cassidy Clarity won 6-2, 6-0 over Storm Lake’s Kelly Smith and, but then lost to Denison’s McKenzie Brus, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

Shirley Coenen opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Denison’s Jory Jahn, but also lost in the quarterfinals, falling to Samantha Rich, 6-2, 6-2.
