NJCAA National Softball Tournament – Lakers take out first two foes

Iowa Lakes took the field for its first ever national tournament appearance and made the most of the day defeating No. 7 ranked Kankakee 8-2 and Sauk Valley 11-3 in five innings.

Iowa Lakes is one of only four teams to remain undefeated after day one and will take on three-time defending national champion and No. 1 Phoenix College at 10 a.m. today Iowa Lakes is now 56-11 on the season.

“We played very well offensively,” said Iowa Lakes coach Mike Bosch. “We had a couple glitches on defense, but overcame them.”

“We’re excited to play against the three-time national champion and see what we can do,” said Bosch.

Iowa Lakes 8, Kankakee 2

The Lakers exploded out of the gates against Kankakee Community College, with Brittany Brohmer hitting a home run in the top of the second inning.

Stephanie Ochoa made it 3-0 in the third with a two-RBI double which scored Caitie Block and Andrea Hacker.

Iowa Lakes tacked on two more in the fourth with an RBI single by Ochoa and three more in the seventh to make it 8-0..

Kanakee threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, loading the bases with no outs, but the Lakers made the plays to keep them off the scoreboard.

Kankakee scored two in the seventh, but Aly Bowers struck out the final three batters to preserve the 8-2 win.

Bowers struck out 11 in winning her 32nd game of the season.

Brohmer was 3-4 with two RBIs, Camiel Salcedo 3-5, Ochoa 2-4 with three RBIs, Kimmie White 2-4, Kristina Manser 2-4 and Caiti Block 2-3.

Iowa Lakes scored two first-inning runs with an RBI double by Kimmie White and a passed ball to make it 2-0.

Sauk Valley used a three-run home run in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but an RBI double by Brohmer scored White to make it 3-3.

Iowa Lakes got two more in the fourth with an RBI double by Aly Cloud and a sacrifice fly by Ochoa.

A huge six-run fifth ended the game at 11-3 with a bases clearing double by Cloud and Brohmer’s second home run of the world series highlighting the inning.

Cloud was 3-4 with three RBIs, White 3-4 with two RBIs, Salcedo 2-4 with one RBI, Brohmer 2-3 with two RBIs and Sarah Dockter 2-2.
