SLP wins 3A 4×800
DES MOINES — The Spirit Lake Park boys 4×800-meter relay team accomplished several goals in winning the Class 3A event on Thursday.
According to coach Brad Travis, it’s the first relay team to win a state title since 1992. They also broke the school record in the event by seven seconds with the winning time of 8:00.66. The previous record was set 20 years ago in 1988.
The winning quartet of senior Joe Nellis, sophomore Brandon Griffin, junior Tyler Gustafson and senior Dan Pearson will have a very good memory. The win also gives the Indians 10 points in the team standings.
Other SLP finishes came up short of a top eight-medal finish. In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Curtis Jackson,Kyle Hiedebrink, Chris Hemphill and Boomer Dreeszen placed 16th in 1:01.26
Dalton Savage placed 17th in the discus with a throw of 138 feet, 6 inches.
