Laker softball finishes fifth at Nationals

NORMAL, Ill. — The Iowa Lakes softball team dropped both games on Friday to finish tied for fifth at the NJCAA World Series

Iowa Lakes dropped game one to No. 1 ranked Phoenix College 7-6 and then turned around and lost to Heartland Community College 5-2 to finish the Laker season.

Iowa Lakes got a first inning run on the defending national champions on a double steal that scored Camiel Salcedo.

It stayed 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Iowa Lakes erupted for five runs to push the lead to 6-0.

Sarah Dockter drew a bases loaded walk to drive in one run. Andy Hacker had a two-RBI double and Aly Cloud had a two-RBI single in the inning.

Phoenix got two runs back on a home run in the bottom of the fourth and then got five more in the fifth to take the lead.

Aly Bowers took the loss working all seven innings.

Iowa Lakes then turned around to play Heartland CC to remain alive in the hunt for a national title.

Heartland got an early run on a home run in the second inning, but Iowa Lakes responded with two in the bottom of the inning with one scoring on an RBI-single by Hacker and one on an RBI-single by Salcedo.

Heartland pushed four runs accross in the fifth, all with two outs, to take the lead for good and end the Lakers’ season.

The loss ends the careers for sophomores Kimmie White, Aly Bowers, Brittany Brohmer, Sarah Dockter, Jennifer Belter, Devin Bennett, and Danae Tuhn.

Iowa Lakes finishes the year 56-13 and again with a fifth place national finish.
