DES MOINES — The Estherville Lincoln Central boys state track qualifiers accomplished several feats wrapping up the 2008 season at Drake Stadium.

Senior Matt Juhl ran his final race on Saturday, the 1600-meter run, and came up short of a third medal for this year’s state medal.

He ran a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 35.80, but finished ninth overall missing eighth by half a second.

“I was pretty excited because I wanted to get the school record,” said Juhl. “The first two or three laps, my legs were getting heavy and I just tried my best to finish.”

Juhl, who earned his first state medal with a seventh-place finish in the Class 2A 1600-meter run, added two medals to his resume this season with his seventh-place finish in the 3A 3200 and medley relay this season.

That medley team of Justin Blinkmann, Jordan Eggers, Scott Schmidt and Juhl also broke a 29-year-old record in the event with their time of 3:38.34. The previous record was set in 1979 and was 3:38.40.

“I’m really happy with how the season went,” said ELC coach Dick Barrett. “Our performances at conference and district was outstanding.

“Matt’s is a three-time state place winner and with those three juniors returning, it’s a good place to start next year.”
