BANCROFT — While Estherville Lincoln Central handed North Sentral Kossuth two losses a year ago, the Midgets are a much younger team in 2008.

On Tuesday, ELC struggled to get outs and the Eagles, No. 4 in the Class 1A preseason poll, took advantage of the extra opportunities to win 13-3 in five innings.

“We didn’t make outs out of outs tonight,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel. “Give North Sentral Kossuth credit. (Aaron) Siefken is a very good pitcher with stae experience. We also gave them a couple extra opportunities every inning.

“Hopefully we’ll chalk this one up and learn a little for the next ball game,” he said.

NSK scored three runs in each of the first two innings and led 8-0 before ELC finally scored in the fourth.

Marcus Stangl and Cody Prather drew walks and Scott Schmidt came up with an RBI double.

That was all ELC could get in that inning and the Eagles came back witha run of their own.

In the fifth inning, Marcus Christensen drew a walk and keith Fandel singled. A groundout by Alex Arends moved the runners to second and third and Stangl came up with a two-RBI single.

However, ELC struggled to make the defensive plays in the bottom of the inning as NSK plated four runs to win on the 10-run rule.

Starter Joel Kazmerzak took the loss for ELC.

ELC (2-1) will try to get back on the right track Friday when the Midgets travel to Forest City for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
