Midgets hang on to beat Indians

Estherville Lincoln Central took an early 5-0 lead against Spirit Lake and then hung on for an 8-4 victory over their rivals on Wednesday.

Keith Fandel pitched a complete game, striking out six batters and walking three while giving up six hits.

Both teams had three errors.

The Midgets opened up with two runs in the first inning and added three more in the second.

A couple of ELC’s errors allowed Spirit Lake to get a run in the third inning and the Indians got within 6-4 before ELC added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. ELC then shut down the Indians the last two innings.

Spirit Lake pitcher Brad Engel took the loss.

Indian pitching recorded seven strikeouts and five walks against the Midgets.

At the plate, Alex Arends had the hot bat as he was 3-4 with three RBIs. Fandel was 1-2 with an RBI.

For Spirit Lake, Engel and Cody Davis each went 1-3.

The Midgets (5-2, 1-1) travel are on the road at the Humboldt Tournament on Saturday.

Spirit Lake travels to LeMars on Friday.
