By Staff | Jun 3, 2008

STORM LAKE — A 10-inning game ended on a sour note for the Estherville Lincoln Central softball team on Monday.

With two outs and runners at second and third bases in the bottom of the 10th, a Storm Lake ground ball went to ELC second baseman Taylar Jacobson. A throw that bounced in the dirt to first baseman Maggie Asman allowed the winning run to score to break the 2-1 tie.

The extra innings began after the Midgettes tied the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Melanie Bandow led off with a triple and Jordan Jacobson came up with an RBI single. Jacobson reached third, but was stranded.

ELC had chances to score in each of the extra innings.

in the eighth, Kristi Juergens hit a two-out double and Maggie Haugen, courtesy running for Juergens, stole third base when Christa Clayton drew a walk.

Again, ELC’s runners were stranded.

In the eighth, Amanda Christensen and Maggie Asman hit a pair of one-out singles and they advanced with a sacrifice bunt by Jacobson. But a long fly ball by Erin Beardsley was caught in center field.

In the 10th inning, Brenna Wegner led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Juergens. Storm Lake walked Clayton and a ground out and pop up ended the ELC threat.

Storm Lake’s Nicole Martins hit a one-out double in the bottom of the 10th and went to third on a groundout to set up the final scenario.

At the plate, Jordan Jacobson was 2-2 with an RBI; Christensen was 2-3, Wegner was 2-5 with a double and Bandow was 2-5 with a triple.

ELC falls to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the Lakes Conference. Storm Lake improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

ELC returns home to host Emmetsburg today. School officials said the varsity will play at 4:45 p.m.

In junior varsity play, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
