Hits scarce in pitchers’ duel

By Staff | Jun 3, 2008

STORM LAKE — Storm Lake pounded out three of its four hits in the first inning to score two runs in the Tornadoes 3-1 victory over Estherville Lincoln Central on Monday.

The Midgets could never get the bats going in a pitchers’ duel between Matt Gruhlke and the Tornadoes’ Ben Seaman.

Both teams had just four hits, but Storm Lake strung them together to earn the 3-1 win.

“We had runners in scoring position, but just didn’t get the hits,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel. “Matt threw well enough to win.”

The Tornadoes added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Jeff Kofmehl.

ELC didn’t score until the top of the seventh when Chance Moore drew a walk and eventually scored when Keith Fandel reached base on a fielder’s choice.

Gruhlke took the loss as he struck out five batters and walked three.

Seaman struck out three batters and walked three.

ELC (6-4, 1-2) hosts Spencer on Wednesday.
