Midgets split at Humboldt

By Staff | Jun 3, 2008

HUMBOLDT — The Estherville Lincoln Central baseball scored plenty of runs at the Humboldt Tournament on Saturday, but only came away with a split.

The Midgets dropped game one, 9-8, to Belmond-Klemme with a couple errors playing a part in the loss then outscored Humboldt in a slugfest 26-13 in the tournament’s consolation game.

In game one, ELC coach Chuck Fandel said an error in the first inning that could’ve been a double play was followed by a home run.

“Instead of it being a solo, it was a three-run shot,” said Fandel.

That home run came off the bat of James Brooks in the first inning.

A grand slam by Heath Tulp in the third inning gave Belmond-Klemme a 7-6 lead.

Each team scored two runs over the final four innings with the Broncos breaking an 8-8 tie in the top of the seventh.

Joel Kazmerzak took the loss. He went all seven innings, striking out six and walking four. Seven runs were earned.

At the plate, Matt Gruhlke was 3-3 with a triple and a solo home run, Alex Arends was 2-3 with a double, Scott Schmidt was 3-4 with three doubles and Marcus Stangl was 2-3 with three RBIs.

ELC needed an inning before starting to swing the bats well in the second game against host Humboldt.

The Midgets scored seven runs in the second helped by a two-run home run by Alex Arends. ELC scored seven more runs in the third inning this time helped by a three-run home run by Gruhlke.

Humboldt battled back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 14-10.

Another solo home run by Arends was part of a two-run fourth inning, but ELC had seven of its 23 hits in a 10-run fifth inning. While the Midgets didn’t have any big hits in the inning, Arends had two two-RBI singles.

Arends ended the game 5-6 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Gruhlke also was 5-6 with three runs, a home run and two doubles. Keith Fandel was 4-5 with a triple while Chance Moore was 3-4 and Marcus Christensen was 3-3 with a double.

Cody Prather earned the win. He pitched three innings giving up seven hits with one strikeout and seven walks. Christensen closed out the game.

ELC (6-3, 1-1) was scheduled to play Storm Lake on Monday. The Midgets host Spencer on Wednesday.
