By Staff | Jun 10, 2008

HULL — Better late than never.

The Estherville Lincoln Central softball team didn’t come up with a single hit until the eighth inning, but three hits in the ninth helped the Midgettes pull out a 2-0 victory over Western Christian on Monday.

However to get to the extra innings, ELC had to step up with some stellar defense in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wolfpack’s No. 8 batter, Mariah Lammers, led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. One more runners reached base as ELC held the runner at third, but on the comeback to pitcher Amanda Christensen, she faked to first and the Midgettes caught Lammers in a rundown for the second out.

While Western Christian moved its runners to second and third, a pop up to shortstop Christa Clayton ended the threat.

“I’m proud of how we handled the pressure in that inning,” said ELC coach Mindy Brechwald. “That was huge getting that runner at third base with only one out.”

Prior to the eighth inning, ELC had only a couple base runners on walks.

Emily Jensen led of with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christensen and third on a groundout by Taylar Jacobson, but was left stranded as Brenna Wegner flew out to the shortstop.

ELC’s defense took down the Wolfpack in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Then clayton led off the ninth with a single and stole second. A sacrifice bunt by Emily Bandow moved Clayton to third and a passed ball allowed her to score the first run of the game.

That was followed by back-to-back singles by Erin Beardsley and Kristi Juergens.

With two outs, the runners advanced on a passed ball. Another passed ball allowed Beardsley to score an insurance run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Christensen recorded her sixth strikeout, the next batter popped up to second baseman Taylar Jacobson and then Christensen recorded her seventh strikeout to end the game.

ELC (13-4, 5-1) returns to action today at Humboldt wit a triangular against the Wildcats and Forest City.
