ELC splits on the road

HUMBOLDT — Except for one inning when Humboldt had six straight hits, the Estherville Lincoln Central softball team played well in a triangular with the Wildcats and Forest City on Tuesday.

However, Humboldt’s six hits allowed the hosts to score five runs and win 5-3 in game one.

ELC came back with a 7-0 shut out against Forest City as eighth-grader Kendall Bosch threw a one-hitter to earn the win.

“I thought Kendall threw really well and (catcher) Kristi (Juergens) called a smart game,” said ELC coach Mindy Brechwald.

In game one, ELC scored first when Brenna Wegner hit a one out triple. Brenna Wegner then had an infield single and stole second, but Beardsley to score until a ground-out to second base by Melanie Bandow brought her in. Wegner then scored on a passed ball to for a 2-0 ELC lead.

Humboldt heated up in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, the Wildcats hit two consecutive singles, a triple, a double, a single and another double before ELC got out of the inning on a groundout.

ELC only managed one more run as Humboldt held on for the win.

At the plate, Beardsley was 2-4 with a triple, Wegner was 2-4, Juergens was 1-3 and Emily Jensen was 1-3.

Amanda Christensen took the loss. She gave up 10 hits, struck out three batters and walked one.

Against Forest City, ELC opened up the scoring in the second with five runs.

With one out, Maggie Asman singled and Christa clayton doubled to put runners at second and third. Taylar Jacobson delivered an RBI single and clayton scored when Beardsley reached on a fielder’s choice. Wegner grounded out to third base, but Jacobson scored on the play. Bandow then reached on an error to score Beardsley and she scored on a double by Juergens.

Juergens was 3-4 with a double and two RBIs, Clayton was 2-3 with a double, Jacobson was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs and Beardsley was 1-4 with a double and an RBI.

Bosch struck out five and walked none.

ELC (14-5, 5-1) travels to Sheldon today.
