Gruhlke, Midgets shut out E’Hawks

A quality outing by Matt Gruhlke plus good defense and run support helped Estherville Lincoln Central shut out Emmetsburg 5-0 on Thursday.

Gruhlke struck out 10 batters, including the last two after Emmetsburg loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning.

He also gave up just two hits and two walks.

In the first inning, Fandel led off with a double. With one out, Gruhlke and Marcus Stangl hit back-to-back singles to bring Fandel home.

In the second inning, Gruhlke struck out the side and ELC produced three more runs.

Jeremy Hunt led off with a single.

Two outs later, Alex Arends came up with an RBI single followed by another single by Gruhlke.

Stangl reached first on a bad throw from third base allowing Arends to score. A wild pitch let Gruhlke come home for a 4-0 ELC lead.

The Midgets added one more run in fourth inning.

Alex Arends hit a single and stole second base. With two outs, Stangl was hit by a pitch and Scott Schmidt delivered an RBI single.

At the plate, Gruhlke was 3-4, Arends was 2-4 with an RBI, Schmidt was 2-3 with an RBI, Stangl was 1-3 with an RBI, Hunt was 1-3 and Fandel was 1-4.

ELC improves to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the Lakes Conference.

The Midgets are on the road Saturday at the Sheffield Tournament.
