Indians pick up first conference win
SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lake baseball team had a good week, winning two of three games.
The week was highlighted by a 10-7 win over Western Christian, the Indians’ first Lakes Conference win in two years.
Spirit Lake also split a pair of games at the North Iowa Tournament, beating their hosts 6-1 and losing to Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka 14-3.
In the win against Western Christian, the Indians scored early and often with three runs in the first inning and two runs each in the second and third.
Ethan Carlson gave up just six hits in four inning of work while striking out five batters and walking five.
Brad Engel pitched the seventh, giving up two hits and striking out one batter.
At the plate, Mitch Peschon was 2-2 with two RBIs, Cody Davis was 1-2 with two RBIs, Carlson was 2-4, Nik Erickson was 1-2 with an RBI and TJ Johnson and Kyle Heidebrink were 1-2.
On Saturday against North Iowa, the Indians plated three runs in the fourth to pull away.
The Indians had only three hits, with Derrick Miner going 2-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Heidebrink was 1-1.
Miner pitched four innings in the win. he struck out three batters and walked one while giving up just three hits.
In the second game, WCLT took advantage of nine Indians errors and had nine hits to build a 10-0 lead before the Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
WCLT answered with four in the top of the sixth and shut out Spirit Lake in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Peschon took the loss. He struck out five batters and walked one.
At the plate, the Indians had just four hits. One each by Carlson, Engel, Davis and Ryan Jennings.
