Midgets split at Sheffield Tourney
SHEFFIELD — The Estherville Lincoln Central baseball team looked like a power-hitting team in its first game at the Sheffield Tournament on Saturday.
ELC’s Matt Gruhlke went 3-3 with three home runs and eight RBIs and Justin Doyle added a solo home run as ELC won 14-4.
ELC couldn’t hang on to a 6-4 lead against host Sheffield in the second game, falling 11-7 after Sheffield scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Against Janesville, Gruhlke started the day with a three-run home run in the first inning and then had another three-run home run in the second. Doyle also had a solo home run in the four-run second inning. Gruhlke’s third home run was a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
Also for ELC, Marcus Stangl was 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Alex Arends was 2-3 with a double and Chance Moore also had a double.
Jeremy Hunt earned the win on the mound.
In five innings of work, he gave up three hits, struck out six and walked seven.
Against Sheffield, ELC scored two quick runs in the first inning, but Sheffield answered with four.
ELC scored four runs in the third helped by a three-run double by Cody Prather.
However Sheffield scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh and ELC came up with an RBI double by Scott Schmidt in the seventh.
Joel Kazmerzak took the loss. he gave up five hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
