Top-rated WCLT needs 10 innings to beat No. 11 A-R
WODEN — Down 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, Armstrong-Ringsted came up with the necessary hits to tie top-rated Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka.
The two teams battled for three more scoreless innings before the Tigers finally plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th for a 3-2 victory.
“We played pretty well and we had chances to score in the top of the 10th,” said A-R coach Hilary Menke. “But we had some bad base-running decisions.”
WCLT plated one in the first and one in the sixth, before the Mustang offense finally broke throw.
Rosie Cheever singled and went to third when the Tigers over-threw first base. She scored and Logan Evans came up with a single and stole second base.
She scored when Brianne Gonzales grounded out.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, WCLT got a leadoff single. A wild pitch sent the runner to second and the next batter came up with a single.
The Mustangs tried to get the lead runner at third base, but the throw was off the mark allowing the game-winning run to score.
Amy Leach pitched all 10 innings in the loss. She struck out seven and walked three while giving up eight hits.
WCLT’s Stacy Schutjer struck out nine and walked none while giving up eight hits.
April Gunderson and Cheever each went 2-4. Morgan Grabinoski, Evans, Megan Sanders and Michele Iris each went 1-4. Sanders’ hit was a double.
A-R falls to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in the Cornbelt Conference.
The Mustangs travel to the Forest City Tournament today where they play Belmond-Klemme at 11 a.m. and Forest City at 1 p.m.
