ELC surpasses 20-win mark at Spencer

By Staff | Jun 24, 2008

SPENCER — The Estherville Lincoln Central softball team surpassed 20 wins on the season with two victories at the Spencer Tournament on Saturday.

The Midgettes (21-5) didn’t allow a run in either game as they defeated Charter Oak-Ute 12-0 in three innings and Denison-Schleswig 10-0 in six innings.

In game one, neither team scored in the first inning while ELC scored six runs in each of the next two.

Amanda Christensen faced the minimum number of batters in three innings and gave up one hit. That hit was a leadoff single in the third inning, but ELC got the force out as the next batter reached on a fielder’s choice. She tried to steal second, but was thrown out by catcher Kristi Juergens.

Christensen struck out four of the nine batters.

Offensively, Taylar Jacobson was 2-2 with two RBIs, Melanie Bandow was 1-3 with three RBIs, Erin Beardsley was 1-2 with two RBIs, Juergens was 1-3 with an RBI, Brenna Wegner was 1-2 with an RBI and Jordan Jacobson and Maggie Asman each went 1-1.

Against Denison-Schleswig, the two teams played 3 1/2 scoreless innings before ELC erupted for nine runs in the fourth.

Melanie Bandow started the inning by reaching on an error followed by a walk to Christa Clayton. Juergens delivered a two-run double with Wegner reaching on a bunt single. A suicide squeeze by Jordan Jacobson brought in Olesen and sent Wegner to third base.

Asman drew a walk and stole second and two runs scored on a single by Taylar Jacobson. Emily Jensen singled and stole second and Beardsley drew a walk. Both scored on a passed ball that took a bounced of the backstop.

Bandow again reached on an error and scored when Juergens hit a ball to right field that was dropped.

ELC added the 10th run two innings later to end the game.

ELC had just seven hits. Juergens was 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. Caitlyn Swisher and Kelsey Shatto both went 1-1 with Taylar Jacobson was 1-2, Jensen was 1-3 and Wegner was 1-4.

Brooke Egeland and the ELC defense gave up just two hits. Egeland struck out two batters and walked two in the win.
