By Staff | Jun 24, 2008

MILFORD — The Graettinger/Terril softball team finally came out on top in a close game in the second day of the Okoboji Tournament on Saturday.

The Knights defeated Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 4-3, but ended up on the short side of a 7-5 loss to Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley in the second game.

The Knights (6-11) got on top early against HMS as Dakota Hoginva led off the game with a single went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Flaharty and to third on a passed ball.

With two outs, Leah Flaharty walked and stole second. Jennie Mart then hit a high pop up, that was dropped by the shortstop which allowed two runs to score.

Leading 2-1 to start the fourth inning, Tasha Neilson led off with a triple and scored on a suicide squeeze by Liz Sparks. Sparks went to second on the play, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Olesen and scored on a passed ball.

The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Knights prevailed.

Seven G/T players had at least one hit.

Neilson was 1-3 with a triple and Leah Flaharty and Olesen each were 1-4 while Dakota Hovinga, Lindsay Flaharty, Theresa Petersen and Mart each went 1-4.

Malorie Girres earned the win. Just one run was earned and she struck out five batters.

Against BHRV, the two teams were tied at 5-5 after three innings, but the Nighthawks scored one run each in the fifth and sixth.

Malorie Girres pitched three innings, giving up five hits with two strikeouts. Mariah Girres pitched the final three innings, giving up six hits with one strikeout.

G/T had 11 hits led by Hovinga, who was 3-4, Mart was 2-3 with an RBI and Malorie Girres was 2-2.

G/T coach Jana Hector said the Knights’ inability to get the third out proved costly.

Hector said the Knights had two outs in the first inning when an error allowed the first run to score.

Conversely, the Knights had plenty of baserunners, but were unable to get them across the plate with 10 left on base for the game.
