SPENCER – Estherville Lincoln Central evidently is starting to play its best ball of the season after winning its second straight Lakes Conference game.

ELC’s Matt Gruhlke gave his defense a lot of help as he struck out 13 batters while giving up just two hits and two walks in a 4-1 victory over Spencer on Wednesday.

The defense helped him out with no errors.

The two teams played six scoreless innings before the offense got on track.

Keith Fandel led off the seventh with a single and Alex Arends reached on a bunt single. Matt Gruhlke helped his cause with a double to the right-center gap to bring in both runs and then Marcus Stangl hit a two-run homer.

In the bottom of the seventh, Spencer’s Greg Anderson led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout to second and scored on a a sacrifice fly by Taylor Harmon.

But Gruhlke ended any threat as he struck out the final batter to end the game.

ELC (15-9, 7-4) travels to Sheldon today.
