ELC 6, Sheldon 2, 8 innings – Back on the winning side
SHELDON – Very few Lakes Conference softball games have been easy for Estherville Lincoln Central this season.
For the second night in a row, the Midgettes found themselves in an extra-inning contest-however unlike Wednesday night, ELC came up with a big four-run eighth inning to defeat Sheldon 6-2 on Thursday.
“”It was just a good team effort with our two pitchers,” said ELC coach Mindy Brechwald. “Offensively we executed and got the ball in play.”
The Midgettes jumped out to the early lead when Erin Beardsley led off with a double, moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Melanie Bandow and scored when Christa Clayton grounded out to the shortstop.
The score remained 1-0 until the Orabs pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
ELC retook the lead in the top of the seventh when Kendall Bosch drew a two-out walk. Courtesy runner Maggie Haugen went to second on a single by Taylar Jacobson and scored from there when Beardsley hit a single down the left-field line.
Sheldon wasn’t ready to end the game yet as they tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off single followed by a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to tie the game at 2-2.
ELC put the pressure on the Orab defense in the eighth inning though.
Christa Clayton led off with a single followed by a bunt from Kristi Juergens. The Orabs didn’t make the play, so ELC had runners at first and second. Brenna Wegner bunted and beat out the throw to load the bases.
Jordan Jacobson then hit a ball to the left side of the infield and Clayton beat the throw home to put ELC ahead 3-2.
The Midgettes began adding insurance runs when Emily Jensen hit the ball at the second baseman. The throw home to get the lead runner was off the mark as courtesy runner Alex Olesen scored.
Pinch hitter Caitlyn Swisher then hit a ball of the pitcher’s glove to score another run and ELC plated one more run when Taylar Jacobson grounded out to first base.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Sheldon got a lead-off single, but the next three batters went down in order with Bosch’s second strikeout, a groundout to Clayton at shortstop and another strikeout by Bosch.
Bosch pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the win. She gave up three hits and had three strikeouts. Amanda Christensen pitched 5 2/3 innings. She gave up four hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
At the plate, Beardsley was 3-5 with a double and an RBI, Juergens was 2-3 with a double and a sacrifice, Taylar Jacobson and Clayton each were 1-4 with an RBI, Christensen was 1-2 and Wegner was 1-3.
ELC (23-7, 9-3) will try to avenge Tuesday’s loss to the Bulldogs today at LeMars.
