ELC denies LeMars a second comeback win
LEMARS – Not this time.
For the second time this week, the Estherville Lincoln Central softball took a big lead against LeMars.
The Bulldogs, who rallied from a 6-0 deficit on Tuesday to win 9-7, couldn’t repeat the feat on Friday as the Midgettes jumped out to a 6-0 lead and then hung on for the 6-3 victory.
ELC held LeMars scoreless for five innings. Still leading 6-0, in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs’ Nathalie Miller reached base on the Midgettes’ first error. That was followed by back-to-back home runs by Emily TeBrink and Morgan Rolfes.
ELC brought in eighth-grader Kendall Bosch to replace starter Amanda Christensen.
Bosch retired all six batters she faced starting with a pop up to right field followed by two straight strikeouts to end the sixth inning.
In the seventh, she struck out the first batter followed by ground-outs to shortstop Christa Clayton and third baseman Melanie Bandow.
ELC scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning.
Emily Jensen hit a two-out single and then Christensen lifted the ball to left-center field for an RBI double.
Neither team mustered any offense over the next two innings, but ELC’s bats came alive in the fifth inning.
Taylar Jacobson hit a one-out single followed by a double from Erin Beardsley. A single by Melanie Bandow scored Jacobson while Bandow went to second on the throw. Beardsley scored on a sacrifice fly by Christa Clayton and an RBI single by Kristi Juergens scored Bandow.
Brenna Wegner reached on the LeMars’ first and only error of the game. With runners on first and second, Jordan Jacobson delivered a double to score two more runs. Trying to stretch the double into a triple, she was tagged at third base for the third out, but ELC led 6-0.
Christensen still earned the win in five innings of work. She gave up four hits with one strikeout and two walks.
At the plate, Bandow and Juergens each went 2-3 with an RBI. jordan Jacobson was 1-2 with two RBIs, Jensen, Christensen and Taylar Jacobson all were 1-3 and Beardsley was 1-4.
ELC (24-7, 10-3) travels to the Storm Lake today before closing out the regular season with home games against Western Christian and Sheldon on Monday and Tuesday before traveling to Emmetsburg on Wednesday.
