Midgets avenge loss to LeMars

By Staff | Jun 28, 2008

LEMARS – The Estherville Lincoln Central baseball team won its fourth straight Lakes Conference game and third this week with an 11-1 victory over LeMars on Friday.

The victory avenges an early 14-1 loss to the Bulldogs on June 6.

One of the biggest differences between the two games-five errors the first time, no errors on Friday.

“It was a good win to turn the tables on them after they beat us badly the first time,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel.

Eight ELC batters had at least one hit as the Midgets recorded 13 hits compared to just five for the Bulldogs.

Keith Fandel pitched all six innings, striking out eight batters and walking four in the victory.

ELC started the scoring in the second inning when Chance Moore drew a walk. Justin Doyle bunted and reached on an error and Fandel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Alex Arends came up with a two-RBI single followed by an RBI single by Matt Gruhlke for a 3-0 lead.

The Midgets plated five runs in the third inning before the Bulldogs finally scored their lone run in the bottom of the inning.

ELC scored its final two runs in the sixth inning when Scott Schmidt led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Cody Prather. Prather advanced to second on the throw home and to third when Jeremy Hunt grounded out. Prather scored on a wild pitch as ELC went ahead by 10.

The Midgets shut the door in the bottom of the inning. After a one-out single, Fandel struck out the final two batters to end the game.

At the plate, Fandel was 2-2 with two runs, Arends was 2-3 with five RBIs, Gruhlke was 3-4 with two RBIs, Prather was 2-4, Doyle was 1-2 with a two-run single, Moore was 1-3 and Hunt and Schmidt each went 1-4 with a double.

After winning conference games against Storm Lake, Spencer and LeMars this week, the Midgets will play four league games in three days starting with a home game against Western Christian on Monday.

ELC hosts Sheldon in a doubleheader on Tuesday followed by a game at Emmetsburg on Wednesday.

The ELC junior varsity baseball team lost 13-5 to LeMars.
