Estherville Lincoln Central baseball team pounded out six runs on five hits in the first inning giving starter Matt Gruhlke all the support he would need.

The left-handed ace struck out 10 batters and gave up just one hit and three walks with the Midget defense playing perfect behind him.

“Matt threw a nice game and the guys made a couple of big plays behind him,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel. “Matt also helped his own cause with the hitting and we had good hitting up and down the lineup.”

ELC started the scoring with leadoff walk to Keith Fandel followed by a single Alex Arends. A single by Gruhlke scored both runs. With one out, Scott Schmidt hit an RBI single followed by an RBI double by Cody Prather. Prather went to third on a passed ball and Jeremy Hunt drew a walk. A groundout to shortstop by Chance Moore scored Prather with Justin Doyle hitting an RBI single to complete the 6-0 lead.

In the second inning, Gruhlke hit a one-out solo home run to center field. That was followed by a single by Marcus Stangl who moved around the bases on a ground out and a passed ball and scoring when Prather reached on an error.

ELC added two more runs in the third with Moore leading off with an infield single, going to second on a ground out and third on a passed ball and scoring on a double by Fandel. Fandel went to third on a groundout and scored on passed ball for the 10-0 lead.

Gruhlke gave up a two-out single in the fourth inning, but picked off the runner. He then gave up a leadoff walk in the fifth inning. However, Fandel made a diving grab and throw to first for out number one, with Gruhlke striking out the final two batters to end the game.

ELC(17-9, 9-4) hosts Sheldon in a doubleheader today.
