Midgettes post 2-1 record at Storm Lake Tournament
STORM LAKE – Although missing a couple starters, the Estherville Lincoln Central softball team posted a 2-1 record at the Storm Lake Tournament on Saturday.
The Midgettes opened with a 6-3 win over Garner-Hayfield, then beat Sioux Central 2-1 in nine innings before losing to Sioux City East 11-8.
Against Garner-Hayfield, ELC held a 2-0 lead until the Cardinals put together three hits with an ELC error to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
ELC answered immediately, loading the bases with a walk to Kelsey Shatto and a bunt single by Amanda Christensen with Erin Beardsley reaching on an error.
Two more Cardinal errors allowed three runs to score with a fourth run scoring on a suicide squeeze bunt by Kristi Juergens.
Juergens was 3-3 with two RBIs, Christensen was 2-3, Brenna Wegner was 2-4, Beardsley was 1-4 with a solo home run in the fifth inning, Emily Jensen was 1-4 with an RBI and Jordan Jacobson was 1-4.
Christensen picked up the win. She gave up seven hits, struck out six batters and walked two.
In game two, ELC’s Kendall Bosch and Briana Scharn competed in a classic pitching duel.
The Rebels scored their lone run in the first inning when the leadoff batter reached third on a Midgettes error. A ball was then hit to the shortstop, but the runner beat the throw home.
ELC tied the game in the fourth inning when Juergens drew a one-out walk. Courtesy runner Kelly Christensen stepped in and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wegner. Christensen eventually scored on a passed ball.
With the score still tied at the end of regulation, the game went to international tiebreaker rules. Neither team scored in the eighth. Wegner started on second base, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out triple by Amanda Christensen.
Bosch earned the win as she pitched all nine innings. She gave up two hits while striking out 14 batters with no walks.
Scharn took the loss as she struck out 15 batters and walked five while giving up two hits.
Besides Christensen’s triple, Beardsley was 1-4.
ELC’s defense struggled against East as all 11runs were unearned.
After falling behind 11-0 after 3 1/2 innings, ELC started a rally and came up with a big five-run sixth inning before succumbing.
At the plate, Bandow was 4-4 with an RBI, Juergens was 2-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, Beardsley was 2-4 with a double and three RBIs and Taylar Jacobson was 2-3.
Also, Wegner, Christensen, Maggie Haugen and Jordan Jacobson were 1-4. Jacobson had an RBI.
