Knights put it all together for sweep over Mavericks
TERRIL – The Graettinger/Terril softball team put everything together in sweeping Clay Central-Everly by scores of 2-1 and 7-1 on Monday.
G/T had two solid pitching performances from Malorie Girres as she allowed just five hits in the two games.
The first game, a continuation of one begun on June 11 at Royal, started in the second inning of play.
The Knights scored first in the top of the fifth inning when Tasha Neilson singled moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Girres and scored on a single by Nikki Brown.
CCE answered using two triples to score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Knights nearly repeated their fifth inning scoring run in the top of the seventh as Neilson again singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Girres. This time she scored when jennie Mart hit a ball down the third base line and the fielder was unable to make the play.
Neilson was 2-3 while Dakota Hovinga, Brown, and Theresa Petersen had the Knights other hits.
Girres gave up just three hits, struck out five and walked none.
In the second game, the Mavericks briefly led with a run in the first inning.
However, the Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Girres and the Knight defense allowed just one more hit the final six innings. Girres struck out five batters and walked one.
G/T had 13 hits in the game. Neilson was 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs, Petersen was 2-3 including a solo home run, Girres was 2-3 with three RBIs, Brown was 2-3 and Leah Flaharty was 2-4.
“It was just a fun ball game,” said G/T coach Jana Hector. “Everyone got on base. They were patient at the plate and drove the ball.”
