The Estherville Lincoln Central softball team took one step closer to sharing the Lakes Conference title with a 5-0 win over Sheldon on Tuesday.

Heading into Tuesday’s games, ELC was one of three teams with three losses in the conference-Spencer and Storm Lake are the other two.

ELC enters today’s game with Emmetsburg with a 12-3 conference record. A win assures the Midgettes of at least a share of the conference title after winning it a year ago.

Against Sheldon, the Midgettes were business-like.

In the first inning, Emily Jensen hit a one-out single. With two outs, Christa Clayton and Brenna Wegner hit back-to-back doubles as ELC took a 2-0 lead.

Brechwald earns win 202 Estherville Lincoln Central coach Mindy Brechwald earned her 200th career coaching victory at the Storm Lake Tournament on Saturday. The milestone arrived with the Midgettes 2-1 victory over Sioux Central. Since that win passed without fanfare, ELC honored Brechwald after her 202nd career victory on Tuesday.

ELC loaded the bases in the second inning, but was denied by the Orabs, but the Midgettes came right back in the third inning.

Clayton led off with a single, stole second and third base and Wegner drew a walk and stole second.

With one out, Clayton scored when Jordan Jacobson grounded out to the shortstop with an Amanda Christensen single driving in Wegner for a 4-0 lead.

ELC added one more run in the fifth as Wegner led off with a double and came home on a single to right by Melanie Bandow.

Defensively, the Midgettes had just one error behind Christensen on the mound. She earned the win as she struck out four batters and walked one.

The Orabs scattered five runs, but never had a runner get to third.

At the plate, Wegner was 2-2 with an RBI and Clayton was 2-3 with an RBI. Bandow, Jacobson and Christensen all were 1-3 while Jensen was 1-4.

ELC (28-8) travels to Emmetsburg today.
