Indians win three straight
SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake softball team is gathering a little momentum winning three straight games over a two-day stretch to start the week.
On Monday, the Indians defeated George-Little Rock 3-0 and followed up with two wins over Western Christian on Tuesday by scores of 6-2 and 5-4. The second game last 11 innings.
On Monday, Spirit Lake scored all three runs in the third. Emily Mercer drew a walk and pinch runner Amanda Bueltel went to second on a wild pitch. Leah Hilpipre doubled to bring in one run. That was followed by an RBI triple by Caila Jones and an RBI double by Megan Ingvall.
Ingvall and Hilpipre each went 1-2 while Jones was 1-3.
Starter Mary Brown pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine batters while walking just one to earn the win.
On Tuesday, the Indians had a big four run fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead and then held on for the win.
Brown struck out seven batters and walked four while giving up just three hits.
At the plate, Jones was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, Mercer was 2-3 with an RBI, Ingvall was 1-3 with an RBI and Hilpipre was 1-3.
In the second game, Brown struck out 11, but gave up seven hits and four walks.
The Indians did better at the plate too though with nine hits.
Tied 3-3 at the end of regulation, Western Christian scored a run in the 11th, but Spirit Lake came back with two in the bottom of the inning.
“Our defense made some great plays to hold runners in scoring positions in the sixth, seventh, eighth, 10th and 11th,” said Spirit Lake coach Joleen Brown. “Our hitters put the ball in play a lot tonight and once again had some timely hits which allowed us to score runs.”
“Our players did a wonderful job of staying focused while playing 18 innings of softball in one night,” she said. ” It was also fun for our seniors to finish their final game on this field with such an exciting victory.”
Kaisha Brown was 3-4 and scored twice and Kori Heidebrink was 2-6 with a double and an RBI.
Also, Jones was 1-4 with an RBI and Alli Gerking and Briana Brunsvold each were 1-4.
Spirit Lake finished the regular season at Storm Lake on Wednesday.
The Indians open Class 3A tournament play at Spencer on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
