EMMETSBURG – The last out is often the hardest one to get, even for an experienced team like Estherville Lincoln Central.

The Midgettes were one out away from earning a share of the Lakes Conference title when Emmetsburg’s Kendall Korley sent the first offering over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

That sent the game into extra innings where ELC went down in order in the eighth. The E’Hawks loaded the bases with no outs on a single, walk and fielder’s choice. Then Morgan Hasbrouck delivered a single to center to score the game-winning run for a 2-1 E’Hawk victory.

ELC had its chances to put the game away earlier.

In the fifth inning, Jordan Jacobson led off with a single. Pinch runner Maggie Haugen went to second on the sacrifice bunt by Amanda Christensen and Taylar Jacobson reached on an error to put runners at the corners. Taylar stole second and then Erin Beardsley hit a ball to the third baseman. Haugen was thrown out at home plate.

However ra walk to Emily Jensen loaded the bases.

Taylar then scored ELC’s only run on a passed ball. Another walk to Kristi Juergens loaded the bases again, but ELC couldn’t come up with the hit.

In the seventh inning, Erin Beardsley hit a two-out double. She tried to score on Jensen’s single to left, but was called out on the tag at home plate.

Prior to the seventh inning, Emmetsburg best chance to score with a leadoff triple by Hasbrouck. ELC got out of the inning though as the next batter bunted to third baseman Melanie Bandow. Bandow faked the throw to first base and tagged hasbrouck for the first out.

ELC only had five hits on the night.

Beardsley was 2-4, Jensen, Juergens and Jordan Jacobson were all 1-3.

Christensen struck out nine batters and walked three in taking the loss.
