Mustangs come alive
NORTHWOOD – After a slow start, Class 1A No. 12 Armstrong-Ringsted blew open a 2-1 lead with six runs in the fourth inning and then cruised to a 14-1 win over Northwood-Kensett to open up 1A tournament play on Wednesday.
“We got of to a shaky start with the score only 2-1 heading into the fourth,” said A-R assistant coach Ali Gunderson. “They had just scored a run when their catcher hit a triple and then stole home.”
But in the top of the fourth, Brianne Gonzales led off with a triple followed by a walk to Amy Leach and a single by Michele Iris. Lisa Pelzer’s single then scored two runs.
Logan Evans also had a single in the inning and two Northwood-Kensett errors allowed A-R to pull ahead 8-1.
Defensively, the Mustangs were perfect and starter Leach only gave up three hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
At the plate, Pelzer was 4-5 with four RBIs, Gonzales was 2-4 with two RBIs, Gunderson was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI, Logan Evans was 2-5 with two RBIs, Morgan Grabinoski was 1-3 and Iris was 1-4.
A-R (20-3) will play the winner of North Iowa and Riceville next Monday at Northwood. Game time is 7 p.m.
