STORM LAKE – The Spirit Lake softball team had a chance to play a part in the Lakes Conference race against Storm Lake, one of the league co-leaders entering Wednesday’s games.
However, the Tornadoes came ready to play and won 5-0. The victory, combined with losses by Estherville Lincoln Central and Storm Lake on Wednesday, gave Storm Lake the conference title outright.
“I felt we played tired tonight,” said Spirit Lake coach Joleen Brown. “We were not mentally ready to play and maybe playing 18 innings the night before played a factor. The difference tonight was that Storm Lake made the plays when they needed to and we did not.”
Spirit Lake managed just three hits, all from Megan Ingvall who was 3-3 with a triple.
Mary Brown took the loss on the mound. She struck out four and walked three while giving up six hits.
Spirit Lake plays Spencer at Spencer in the Class 3A Region quarterfinal on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
