Class 1A Regional Softball – A-R tops Riceville
NORTHWOOD – Class 1A No. 12 Armstrong-Ringsted had a brief scare in its softball regional quarterfinal game against Riceville as the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
However, the Mustangs came right back with three runs and held on for a 4-2 victory.
With the win, A-R advances to play top-rated Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka in the regional semifinal today in Algona. Game time is 7 p.m.
A-R ace Amy Leach gave her defense plenty of help, striking out the side in the first, fifth and seventh innings and ending with 15 strikeouts.
However, the Wildcats got a leadoff single in the third followed by a Mustang error and a passed ball to put runners on second and third. A single brought home one run with the second scoring on a sacrifice fly.
That seemed to wake up the Mustangs.
Brianne Gonzales led off the bottom of the third with a home run to straight left field to cut the deficit to one.
Michele Iris, Lisa Pelzer and Morgan Grabinoski then hit consecutive singles with Iris scoring on Grabinoski’s hit. Pelzer then gave A-R the lead when she scored on a passed ball.
A-R added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Rosie Cheever hit a double and scored on a single by Gonzales.
The Wildcats came up with a single followed by Leach’s 13th strikeout and another Riceville single in the top of the seventh. Then Leach struck out the final two batters to preserve the win.
At the plate, Gonzales was 2-3 with the home run, Cheever was 2-3 with a double and Pelzer was 2-3. Also Iris was 1-2 and Grabinoski was 1-3.
