Midgets come up with another 20-win season
ALGONA – The Estherville Lincoln Central gave sophomore pitcher Jeremy Hunt plenty of run support early and the Midgets notched another 20-win season with a 14-2, six-inning victory over Algona in the regular season finale on Wednesday.
The Midgets scored 10 runs in the first inning, capped by a two-run home run by Matt Gruhlke, with an assist from three Bulldog errors.
“That helps a young pitcher when you get on top like that,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel. “Then he can go in and challenge the batters.”
Hunt gave up just four hits while striking out six batters and walking six.
Offensively, the Midgets pounded out 15 hits led by Gruhlke who went 3-5 with the two-run home run, two doubles and three RBIs.
After the 10-run first inning, ELC got one run in the third when Gruhlke doubled and scored on a single by Stangl. The Midgets then added three in the sixth and held the Bulldogs to preserve the win.
Also at the plate, Alex Arends was 3-5 with a double and three RBIs. Chance Moore had just one hit, a double, but also came up with three RBIs.
Cody Prather was 3-4 while Stnagl was 2-4 with an RBI and Schmidt was 2-4. Also, Justin Doyle was 1-3 with an RBI.
ELC (20-11) opens Class 3A postseason play on Friday against Spencer. Game time is 5 p.m. at Spirit Lake.
