Managing editor David Swartz presented Matt Gruhlke the Esthervile Daily News Athlete of the Year in baseball for the 2008 season on Thursday.

Gruhlke led the Midgets to their first state berth since 1987. The southpaw went the distance on the mound in playoff games against Spencer and Sergeant Bluff-Luton. He only threw six pitches against Storm Lake in relief of Keith Fandel, but earned the win when ELC rallied in the bottom of the seventh.

For the regular season, Gruhlke was named to the Lakes Conference First Team All-Conference and Class 3A Northwest All-District First Team.

He batted .456 in the regular season with 41 RBIs.

The Daily News awards are given to the top ELC athletes in each sport at the conclusion of the season.
