Fun at the 2008 Iowa Games

AMES – Several area residents made a trip to the 2008 Iowa Games this past weekend to compete with athletes around the state.

A few returned home with medals. Here are some results.

Youth track and field

Matt Juhl placed first in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes 7.21 seconds and second in the 1500-meter run in 4:18.81.

Other track and field participants were Jordan Eggers, Dan Kirchner and Scott Schmidt.

Dan Olsen competed in tennis singles and doubles.

Badminton

The duo of Laura Inman and Laura Menendez placed first in female doubles Division 41-60 to bring home gold.

Menendez played mixed doubles with Dinesh Kalyanasundaram of Ames and they also won gold.

Youth softball

The Estherville Midgets 14-and under team won three games Saturday, including two by just one run, on the way to winning their pool.

In the championship bracket on Sunday, Estherville lost, but gave up fewer runs than the other semifinal team to earn third place.

Team members are Kendall Bosch, Macy Dahl, Alyssa Johnson, Megan Karels, Emily Kirchner, Taylor Lago, Shelby Lappegard, Allie Sievert, Corin Swalve, Christina Tendal and Sadie Winter. The team was coached by Mike Bosch and Marci Lago.

Tennis

Several Estherville tennis players took part in the Iowa Games, but none returned home with medals.

Lexie Hash and Stephanie Wittmer both competed in the youth division.

Lexie also played mixed doubles with her father, Roger.

Chris Olsen and Dan Olsen also took part in the games.

Dan and Menendez also played mixed doubles.

3-on-3 basketball

Competing on Team Fridley from Estherville were Kyle Grems, Jim Mohler, Dylan Sievert, Spencer Johnson and Jim Rosendahl.

Table Tennis

Jim Mohler competed in both singles and doubles table tennis.
