Laker runners open season at time trial

By Staff | Aug 26, 2008

FORT DODGE – Iowa Lakes Community cross country runners had their first taste of action for the 2008 season at the time trial meet in Fort Dodge on Friday.

Both the men and women ran a 5K race together,.

Teams competing were other Iowa community colleges with eight women’s teams and seven men’s teams with 48 women and 72 men.

Iowa Lakes only ran of its four team members in the women’s race with one member sick and another absent.

While the Lakers finished eighth, they were only 11 points behind the seventh place team.

Olivia Craig, a former Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted runner, was the first to cross the finish line as she placed 34th in 29 minutes, 47 seconds.

“She had a good start,” said Iowa Lakes coach Molly Struve. “I look for her to get much better in future meets.”

Returning runner Candace Klepper placed 38th in 31:06.

Iowa Central won the meet with the low of 40 points followed by North Iowa Area Community College, Iowa Western, Indian Hills, Des Moines Area Community College, Southwestern and Ellsworth.

On the men’s side, the Lakers only have three runners this season.

Bart Zimmer placed 59th in 21:09, Dane Ross was 67th in 23:29 and Mitchell Sparks was 68th in 23:45.

“The race, overall, was disappointing for our teams,” said Struve. “Having a meet this early in the season allowed us to see where all the teams were at in their training. We have been practicing for two weeks, similar to all the other schools, but you can tell that the kids did not put on as many miles as some of the other teams over the summer.

Iowa Central won with 22 points followed by NIACC, Iowa Western, Southwestern, Indian Hills with Ellsworth and Iowa Lakes tying.

“We have a lot of work to do before our next meet, which is in two weeks. It was a good eye-opener for the athletes and I think it will be a good motivator for practice and for the meets to come,” she said.

The Lakers travel to Council Bluffs on Saturday, Sept. 6 for the Iowa Western meet.

Editor’s note: Matt Juhl of Estherville, finished 26th overall in 19:01, running for Iowa Central.
