Lakers struggle through first weekend
COUNCIL BLUFFS – The Iowa Lakes volleyball team won its first match of the season, but it was downhill from there at the Iowa Western Tournament this past weekend.
The Lakers returned home with a 1-6 record.
Iowa Lakes started the tournament with a 25-19, 25-16 win over St. Cloud on Friday behind a strong output from Erin Jacobsen who had 10 kills while Alison Albers had seven kills and seven blocks.
Teegan Hunziker had seven kills.
The Lakers then lost 25-16, 25-22 to Southwestern Community College with Hunziker leading the way with eight kills and Albers had 10 blocks.
In other matches, Hillsborough beat the Lakers 25-14, 25-20; Kishwaukee won 25-15, 25-18, Jefferson won 25-20-25-17, Barton won 25-17, 25-18 and West Plain won 25-19, 25-19.
For the tournament, Hunziker had a team-high 46 kills along with 36 digs.
Jacobsen had 35 kills, 10 blocks and 40 digs while albers had 23 kills and 24 blocks.
Defensively, Mindy Meyer led the way with 57 digs and Racheal Nelson also had 20 blocks.
Stover had 54 assists and 36 digs while Beatriz Besora had 43 assists.
Caitlin Moore had eight of the team’s 20 ace serves.
Iowa Lakes hosts its first home match Thursday when Iowa Western comes to Estherville on Thursday.
The Lakers host their tournament Friday and Saturday with play starting at 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
