G/T opens play against No. 3 Aurelia

GRAETTINGER – After struggling through two years against bigger schools in Class A, the Graettinger/Terril football team will face a test in its first 8-player contest on Friday.

The Knights take to the road to face Aurelia, rated No. 3 in the Radio Iowa Poll. Aurelia made the playoffs last season only to lose in the first round to Glidden-Ralston.

G/T coach Karlton Hector said he hasn’t found out much about the Bulldogs.

“We’ll just have to go out and see what happens while making adjustments as we go along,” said Hector. “It’s nice not to start the season with a district game. It gives us time to make adjustments for district play.”

The Knights were surprised in the 2007 season opener when Schaller-Crestland came out in shotgun formation and started throwing the ball around.

“We had to make adjustments then and did a good job,” Hector said.

Defensively, the Knights will just work to feel the gaps with the lineman and linebackers and the defensive backs cover the zones if Aurelia comes out throwing.

The Knights are excited about getting to play.

“For us, we just need to be better disciplined and not have the mistakes and missed assignments we had last year,” said Hector.

He attributed part of that time to playing against bigger teams.

“We were just worn down and got wore out,” he said. “This year it’s a more equal playing field with schools more our size.

“The last couple days’ we’re just sitting around waiting for game time.”
