Mustangs start strong against Tigers
ARMSTRONG – Last year’s runner-up 8-player team Armstrong-Ringsted picked up where it left off a year ago.
The Mustangs scored 28 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 40-6 win over Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka in the season opener on Friday.
“We had a great start for us, but wee need to work on playing for four quarter,” said A-R coach Robert Zotz.
Tyler Tonderum took the opening kickoff, breaking at least two tackles, for 72 yards to start the game. Ethan Eisenbacher converted the first of four point-after attempts in the first quarter for a 7-0 A-R lead with just 19 seconds off he clock.
The Mustangs then held the Tigers to a three plays and out.
Two plays later, Tonderum busted through the line for a 43 yard run and A-R suddenly led 14-0.
The Tigers managed a first down on their next drive, but eventually had to punt.
This time quarterback Ridge Christiansen connected with Travis Hantelman on a 14–yard pass as A-R led 21-0.
A-R’s next score came on a 38-yard run by Hantelman.
The Mustangs offense suddenly slowed in the second half, but Christiansen scored on a 40-yard run and Eisenbacher finally missed a point-after attempt ,b ut A-R led 34-0 at the break.
In the third quarter, Christiansen scored on a 1-yard run.
The Tigers didn’t get on the board until the fourth quarter for the final tally.
Tonderum and Christiansen each had 100 yards rushing with Hantelman rushing for 63 yards.
Travis Hantelman and Cody Hantelman each caught one pass for 15 yards.
The Mustangs had 263 yards on the ground and 30 through the air.
Leading tacklers were Willie Beeler, Spencer Clausen and Tonderum as A-R held the visitors to 79 yards rushing and 54 passing.
Christiansen had two fumble recoveries. Clausen nabbed two interceptions and Travis Hantelman had one.
A-R (1-0) is on the road against Corwith-Wesley-Luverne next Friday.
