Spirit Lake drops opener to H-M-S

SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake football team got off to a good start in the first game, taking an early 7-0 lead on a Derrick Miner touchdown run.

However visiting Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn closed out the game with 19 unanswered points for a 19-7 victory.

After Miner’s run, Mitch Peschon kicked the extra point.

H-M-S responded before halftime to tie the score.

The Hawks scored once in each of the final two quarters.

The Indians rushed for 94 yards.

Miner had 71 yards on 17 carries and Nik Erickson carried nine times for 43 years.

Solsma was 12-19 for 96 yards.

TJ Johnson had four catches for 31 yards.

Derek Halquist led the defense with 12 tackles and one interception. TJ Johnson had eight tackles and an interception, Miner had eight tackles and Erickson had seven tackles.

The Hawks amassed 307 yards rushing and were 2-5 passing for 45 yards.

The Indians (0-1) are at Sioux Central for a non-district game.
