A week ago, the Spirit Lake Park girls cross country team had five runners finish in the top 10.

On Tuesday, the SLP boys team took their turn with five runners in the top 10 at the Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted Invitational.

With runners placing 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10, the Class 2A No. 2 Indians beat Class 3A No.3 Algona 27 to 40. The Bulldogs had just three runners in the top 10 led by Class 3A No. 1 Ryan McMahon, who finished in 17 minutes, 3.92 seconds.

SLP’s first two runners, Jesse Baldwin and Alec Baldwin, are rated No. 10 and No. 14, respectively in Class 2A.

Jesse finished second in 17:37 while Alec finished third in 17:48.

Tyler Gustafson finished fifth in 18:12 with Keith Byers placing seventh in 18:18 and Mitch O’Neill was 10th in 18:35.

Non-counting scores were Jon Messer in 17th in 19:02 and Jordan Knox in 21st in 19:10.

The bad news for other teams-SLP coach Tim Heinitz said he thought his team was “running tired.”

That was due to a hard practice on Monday.

“Sometimes a team has to run tired,” he said.

Heinitz said he expects a lot of Byers, just a freshman, who spent a long weekend at the fair showing animals.

“Jesse and Alec ran well and Mitch kept ahead of the two other Algona runners,” said Heinitz.
