Defense helps Indians to first victory

SPIRIT LAKE – Spirit Lake probably surprised a few people with its 35-14 win over Rock Valley/Boyden-Hull on Friday.

For the Indians it all started with defense.

Derek Halquist started the scoring as he picked up a Nighthawk fumble and ran 25-yards in for the score at the 6:21 mark in the first quarter.

Just two minutes later, Tyler Solsma intercepted a pass and went 40 yards for a score.

The next score came on a 10-yard pass from Solsma to Tucker Stellinga.

Solsma also scored on a -yard sneak with Nik Erickson scoring the two-point conversion.

The Indians final score came on a halfback pass as Derrick Miner connected with TJ Johnson on a 72-yard strike.

The Indians had a blanced attack with 131 yards on 47 carries and 129 yards through the air on five receptions.

Erickson led the Indians on the ground with 66 yards on 19 carries. Miner had 56 yards on 21 carries.

Solsma was 4-for-12 passing for 56 yards. Miner was 1-1 for 73 yards.

The Nighthawks rushed 21-times for 58 yards and had 18 completions for 263 yards. However Rock Valley/Boyden-Hull had five turnovers.

Spirit Lake (1-2, 1-0) is at Sibley-Ocheyedan on Friday.
