Playing in their first official fall meets, the Iowa Lakes women’s and men’s golf teams are off to a strong start.
On the men’s side, the Lakers won both the Des Moines Area Community College on Thursday and then won the Minnesota West Tournament this weekend.
In women’s competition, Ricca Soper earned runnerup medalist at DMACC and took medalist honors at Minnesota West.
At the DMACC Invite, played at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, Iowa Lakes carded a 296 followed by Marshalltown with 304, DMACC with 320 and North Iowa Area Community College with 321.
Iowa Lakes freshman AJ Appel, from Lakes Mills, earned medalist honors with a 71.
Rounding out the Lakers scores were Jarvis Weber with a 74, Nick Christensen with a 75 and Scott Benson with a 76.
Non-counting score came from Joel Keady, who carded an 82.
In the women’s meet, Sam Pingel from DMACC took medalist honors with a 76.
Iowa Lakes’ Ricca Soper was runner-up medalist with a 77. April Wolf carded a 90, Abby Hohensee had a 93 and Katie Heddinger had a 97.
Non-counting score was a 109 from Lauren Hartman.
At the Minnnesota Invitational, the Lakers had two teams.
The Iowa Lakes Blue Team, led by medalist Weber with a 72, edged Rochester by a stroke, 297 to 298.
Century was third with a 319 followed by Iowa Lakes Gold with 330, Minnesota West with 335 and Riverland with 365.
Benson led the blue team with a 73 while Appel and Max Koster each carded 76s. Christensen had an 82.
On the Gold team, Joel Keady had a 76, Marc Siemers had an 80, Spencer Baak had an 85 and Nick Skinner had an 89.
Non-counting score wa a 94 from Caleb Faber.
On the women’s side, Soper shot an 80, 11 strokes better than runnerup medalist Kari Rosengren from Ridgewater.
Iowa Lakes shot a 271 and Minnesota West had the only other complete team. They shot a 308.
Other Laker scores, Wolfe carded a 95 and Hohensee had a 96.
Non-counting scores were a 106 from Hartman and a 110 from Heddinger.
The Iowa Lakes teams host their invitational at Brooks Golf Club in Okoboji on Friday.
