Indians post 3-2 record at Forest City
FOREST CITY – The Spirit Lake volleyball team had a long day at the Forest City Tournament Saturday, but the Indians did well to come away with a 3-2 record.
“We lost to Forest City, who is ranked 13th. We played them close so if we would have had a few less hitting errors or unforced errors we may have been able to win that match,” said Spirit Lake coach Kolette Delperdang. “The other loss for the day was against North Sentral Kossuth, who we won against last week in our tournament. They played much better than they had last week so they were a much tougher team.”
The Indians started pool play against Forest City, losing 2-1 by scores of 21-17, 23-25 and 15-13.
The Indians then defeated Webster City 2-1 by scores of 16-21, 21-18, 15-11.
Placing second in pool play put the Indians in the silver bracket.
The Indians opened with a 2-1 win over Spencer by scores of 21-8, 13-21 and 15-9, but then lost to North Sentral Kossuth 2-0, 21-15, 21-18.
in the final match of the day, Spirit Lake defeated Boone 2-1 by scores of 21-19, 19-21, 15-6.
“Overall I was happy with the play. The team played tough and continue to make improvements,” said Delperdang. “However, it’s time to get serious now with the conference play ahead of us. We play Hull Western Christian Tuesday (today) and then next week we have three matches – Sheldon, Storm Lake and Spencer – all very tough competitive teams in the conference.”
Amber Kirschbaum led the Indians with 37 kills on the day along with 11 blocks.
Ashley Colwell had 26 kills while Sara Martinson contributed 20 kills and eight blocks.
Kori Heidebrink was 51-of-52 serving with five aces. She also had 44 set assists.
Alex Horsman had 38 assists and was 47-of-50 from the serving line. She also had seven kills.
Kylie Stoll was 31-of-31 serving and had 48 digs.
Spirit Lake (10-6, 1-0) hosts Class 2A No. 1 Western Christian today.
