DES MOINES – The Iowa Lakes cross country teams competed at the Grand View College Invitational on Friday in Des Moines.

With 98 participants, the Lakers’ Bart Zimmer finished in the middle of the pack, placing 50th in 29 minutes, 47 seconds in the 8K race.

Matt Baehler, running his first-ever collegiate race, finished 91st in 34:55 and Dane Ross placed 93rd in 35:22.

“Bart had an excellent race; running a personal best time by over a minute,” said Iowa Lakes coach Molly Struve. “He started strong and remained in good position throughout the whole race. He ran a smart race and his time shows it.

“This was Matt’s first meet at the college level. He managed to stay with Dane for the beginning of the race and then slowly broke away toward the end. Dane ran a slightly slower time than last week, but he had a great start and looked strong during the race,” she said. “The course had a few more hills and curves than the last meet and that sometimes can affect the overall times. “

Drake won the meet with Southwestern Community College placing second and Iowa Western CC placing third.

The Lakers Brandon Minear started the race, but had to drop out due to injury. Mitchel Sparks also didn’t run as he is healing from a recent injury.

Women’s race

Candace Klepper again was the lone Laker female runner competing. She finished 44th in 23:17 out of 66 participants in the 5K race.

Grand View won the meet followed by Drake and Mount Mercy.

“Candace ran another great race and dropped her time by one second from last weekend,” said Struve. “She had a good start and maintained her position and pace throughout the race. We have ran against most of these teams before, so she was able to pick out a few girls she knows are at her level and stick with them during the race.”

Struve said Klepper has improved at every race and is ready for regionals and nationals.

“The other four girls are still out with injuries; hopefully one or two of them will be ready to join Candace next weekend,” the coach said.

The Laker cross country team travels to the Briar Cliff Invitation on Saturday for the final regular season meet.
