ELC eighth-grade rallies to tie Spencer
An exciting finish to Tuesday’s eighth-grade football game ended in a 22-22 tie between Estherville Lincoln Central and Spencer.
According to coach Dan Hewitt, ELC was down 22-16 when the Midgets drove to the Spencer 4-yard line and then lost the ball on a fumble with 5 minutes left in the game.
Spencer turned the ball back over with Brad Olson recovering the ball for ELC. The Midgets drove to the 9-yard line where they threw an interception with 2:45 remaining.
The Tigers again turned the ball back over with Derrick Neiland picking off a pass at the 30-yard line with 1:15.
ELC again drove inside the 10-yard line and then was called for a delay of game penalty.
Brice Hansen nearly reached the end zone on a roll-out pass from Evan Hansen with 24 seconds remaining.
Finally, Evan Hansen scored on a quarterback sneak.
The two-point conversion attempt was downed inches from the end zone.
ELC then had an onside kick that was recovered by Neiland. ELC took two shots at the end zone before time ran out.
Evan Hansen scored ELC’s first touchdown on a 35-yard run with Brice Hansen tacking on the two-point conversion on a 3-yard reception.
Brice Hansen scored the second touchdown on a 12-yard run with Evan running in the 2-point conversion.
Brice had 115 yards on 16 carries while Evan had 136 yards on 15 carries. Matt Burrell had three carries for 11 yards and Tucker Milburn had three carries for 7 yards.
Passing, Evan was 9-for-15 for 119 yards and two interceptions.
Brice caught seven passes for 79 yards. Tyler Swanson and Adam Reiter each caught one pass for 20 yards.
Evan Hansen had three kickoff and two punt returns for a total of 100 yards. Brice had one return for 1-yard.
Defensive leaders, Reiter had two interceptions, Evan Hansen had seven tackles with two sacks, Brice Hansen and Jacob Olson each had six tackles. Brad Olson had five tackles and a fumble recovery. Neiland and Levi Quastad each had a fumble recover.
In the B Game, ELC won 6-0.
Randy Leon and Danny Clemmons each had a fumble recovery. Evan Hansen scored on a 6-yard touchdown run.
Adam Reiter was 5-8 passing for 62 yards with one interception.
The ELC eighth grade team travels to Trimont, Minn next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest with Martin County West.
